Initiatives and Programs
*K-6 Implementation
Literacy Place from Scholastic, Inc., selected by a DoDDS-coordinated review team of teachers, parents and administrators, is being used as the primary tool to support curriculum in Kindergarten through Grade 6. School year 1997-98 served as a pre-implementation/training year, and this year the program if being fully implemented in UK schools. Literacy place is an integrated program using literature as the springboard for reading, writing, grammar, usage, mechanics and spelling instruction. The program is built around three literacies – Personal, Intellectual, and Social – with two units for each literacy. The Personal Literacy strands are entitled “Personal Voice” and “Personal Expression.” The Intellectual Literacy strands deal with “Problem-Solving” and “Managing Information.” The Social Literacy strands are “Teamwork” and “Community Involvement.” Mentors who apply the literacies of the unit in a real-world workplace introduce the units.
*Grades 7-12 Pre-implementation
School year 1998-1999 served as a pre-implementation year for use of newly purchased materials entitled Elements of Writing (from Harcourt Brace/Holt, Rinehart, Winston) and The Language of Literature (from McDougal-Littell) as tools to support the DoDDS Language Arts/Reading Integrated Standards. These programs were selected by a DoDDS-coordinated review team of parents, teachers, and administrators. Implementation training in the use of the materials for standards-based instruction and Best Practices for Language Arts instruction was provided throughout SY 1999-2000.
