Holiday WebQuest is intended to be a fairly brief activity undertaken during the holiday time period in order to give students an opportunity to learn something about holiday celebrations in other cultures.

Depending upon how this topic is approached, the main purpose can be to learn about different kinds of celebrations of one specific holiday, such as Christmas, or the focus can be placed on learning more about celebrations the students might not celebrate themselves, such as Ramadan. Whatever the focus the teacher chooses to make, the following grade three DoDEA standards are addressed by this activity:

  • SS5b: explain how culture influences the development of behavior, attitudes,
    values, and opinions.
  • SS10c: identify basic needs common to all individuals.
  • E1b.4: Comprehension--informational textuse the structure of informational text to retrieve information;
    • analyze the causes, motivations, sequences and results of events;
    • understand the concepts and relationships described;
    • use reasoning and information from within and outside the text to
    examine arguments; and
    • describe in their own words what new information they gained from a
    nonfiction text and how it relates to their prior knowledge.
