Problems Installing Gradebook

I am seeing a number of different problems with installing Gradebook and different people have found different solutions for different issues. I will place the suggested solutions on this one page:

If you go to the demo site and find the Quick Link to Gradebook and do an install but it doesn’t work, you may have an earlier version of Gradebook or maybe Java. Uninstall any Gradebook you find and any Java. Then reboot you machine and reinstall it from the SMS demo site. http://10.7.18.56/ChancerySMS

I just wanted to share a tidbit of information with the SMS Training Site. Here at Baumholder we ran into a problem with getting the Gradebook to install. I know there's lots of ways this could be a problem, but I have one solution you can try also. We found out the server named "SMSTEST" was not resolving through the DNS (Domain Name
Server) because it needed to resolve through WINS (Windows Name Server).
SO....to test this open a command line box by:

1) Start -> Run
2) type cmd and hit enter
3) in the Command Line Interface type -> ping smstest
4) If you see an IP address and things pop through your screen you are fine. If NOT you have the problem I described above.

If you have the problem I WOULD PUT IN A SERVICE REQUEST (Faster) OR if you are brave.... you can fix one computer at a time by editing the host file by:

*Note this is only for Windows 2000 Windows XP will automatically find the WINS.

1) Open up Windows explorer
2) Navigate to -> WINNT -> SYSTEM32 -> Drivers -> etc
3) In there you will find the host file
4) Open it using Notepad
5) Add this to the top line -> 10.7.18.56 smstest
6) Save the file making sure there is NO .TXT extension or it will not work.

You problem lay elsewhere. I would uninstall any java application first and then retry. I downloaded Java ver 5.0 and got errors. When I uninstalled it and reinstalled from the training site it worked fine. Try that. If the certificate from Verisign pops-up click Yes and it should continue installing. Hope this helps!

I have heard that you should clean out any c:\temp files and that has helped.

Problem: I got an XP laptop, logged in, and clicked on the click link as before.

After the downloading process, the computer security asked if I trusted SMS Chancery to access the workstation and install software.

Then it wanted to install something called RSA Security Manager.It asked if I trusted "The Legion of the
Bouncey Castle."

Then below that there was a warning from Microsoft or McAfee saying that we strongly urge you not to trust this source. So I clicked "No." (Wrong ANSWER... CLICK YES.... We like Bouncey Castle.)
